If you’ve lost your Massachusetts vital record, never fear! Massachusetts has five ways you can get a Replacement Birth Certificate for Massachusetts; in person, online, by phone, fax or mail. Some birth records in Massachusetts are restricted from public access like those of out-of-wedlock births.

There are different documentation requirements for persons obtaining a birth certificate for a person born out-of-wedlock and for the marriage of a person born out-of-wedlock. You can also obtain heirloom certificates.
In-Person Massachusetts Replacement Birth Certificate
If you would like to obtain your birth certificate in person you can visit the registry counter Monday through Friday from 8:45am-4:45pm. Walk-in service is the fastest way to get your birth certificate. The Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics is not open on state holidays. Upon arriving fill out the application and submit the $18.00 fee. If the exact date is not known the $18.00 includes a ten (10) year search. Order Massachusetts Replacement Birth Record Online
Like many states, the Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics doesn’t accept online orders but uses a third party company called VitalChek Network as many other states do. VitalChek is the official government authorized service. Its secure and can be accessed 24 hours a day. The cost of the first certified copy is $45.00 and each additional copy of the same record is $37.00. Only major credit cards are accepted for online orders including American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa. Orders can be process in 7 to 10 business days of receipt for an additional fee of $15.00 and shipped Federal Express Overnight. Keep in mind the Access Policy if ordering a certificate for someone born out-of-wedlock. A ten (10) year search is not included with online orders.

If paying by check please make your check payable to “The Commonwealth of Massachusetts” and enclose a business-size, self-addressed envelope. Decided whether you would like to receive your certificate regular mail or expedited mail. Regular mail takes 20-30 days and cost $28.00; expedited mail cost $37.00 and will be process within 7 to 10 days of receipt. However, research is not available with the expedited service.
Replacement Birth Certificate By Fax/Phone
You can fax your birth certificate request for a Massachusetts birth certificate to VitalChek. VitalCheck can be reached by fax at 1-866-550-2067 or order by phone at 1-866-601-0891. Again, an additional charge for using VitalCheck applies, and all major credit cards are accepted. Keep in mind that research is not available for fax orders, also view the Access Policy if requesting a restricted birth certificate.
Heirloom Birth Certificates
Massachusetts is one of the only states that offers heirloom certificates. These special certificates are specially printed on attractive blue and gold parchment 11”x17” paper, hand-signed and typically framed as family keepsakes. Heirloom certificates cost $50.00 in-person and $60.00 by mail. A mail order form can be found online also. Be sure to not on the form that you are requesting a heirloom certificate and enclose the correct amount.
