There are different documentation requirements for persons obtaining a birth certificate for a person born out-of-wedlock and for the marriage of a person born out-of-wedlock. You can also obtain heirloom certificates.

In-Person Massachusetts Replacement Birth Certificate

If you would like to obtain your birth certificate in person you can visit the registry counter Monday through Friday from 8:45am-4:45pm. Walk-in service is the fastest way to get your birth certificate. The Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics is not open on state holidays. Upon arriving fill out the application and submit the $18.00 fee. If the exact date is not known the $18.00 includes a ten (10) year search. Like many states, the Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics doesn’t accept online orders but uses a third party company called VitalChek Network as many other states do. The cost of the first certified copy is $45.00 and each additional copy of the same record is $37.00. Only major credit cards are accepted for online orders including American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa. Keep in mind the Access Policy if ordering a certificate for someone born out-of-wedlock. A ten (10) year search is not included with online orders.

Requesting Massachusetts Vital Record by Mail

If paying by check please make your check payable to “The Commonwealth of Massachusetts” and enclose a business-size, self-addressed envelope. Decided whether you would like to receive your certificate regular mail or expedited mail.
